construction and fit |

Manufactured
using heavy weight plywood and
composite materials, the TruckVault
design is functional, durable,
and all visible components are
cosmetically pleasing. The top
deck is carpeted and the drawer
fronts can be nicely finished
with a choice of black composite,
light oak or dark walnut material.
The drawer tops are capped with
plastic runners and include a
reliable, heavy-duty lock, However,
an upgrade option an intelligently
designed push-button Touch
combination lock is the
very best Ive ever encountered.
The Touchlock is strong, secure
and keyless, yet opens within
seconds. It is well worth the
$125 premium.
The
TruckVault top platform fits snugly
against the vehicles interior
side walls and rear seatback in
its normal, upright position.
No unsightly gaps are visible.
My TruckVault platform also has
top-entry wing compartments above
each wheel well that swing up
on piano hinges. This thoughtful
addition creates accessible storage
in what otherwise would be dead
space between the TruckVault frame
and the vehicles interior
sides.
The
only design glitch here is that
these pockets of space have no
forward enclosing panels, so items
sometimes slide out when the rear
seats are folded down, a small
design oversight. The Vault, however,
does come with panels to enclose
the other end of this storage
pocket (at the rear of the vehicle
adjacent to the faces of the drawers).
In fact, on one of these recessed
panels, I installed a 12-volt,
auxiliary power outlet kit (Radio
Shack product #270-1544A) and
hardwired it to the battery. I
now have rear power points to
simultaneously re-charge an Apple
PowerBook laptop, digital camera
batteries, a portable strobe or
a Firewire portable hard disk
(up to three devices at once).

| TruckVault's effect
on vehicle weight, ride and safety |
|
|
Even before its
loaded with equipment, the 210-pound TruckVault
adds considerable weight to the rear axle
of any vehicle, and this can affect tire inflation
pressure, the ride, and safety. Since my Explorer
sat noticeable lower on the rear axle once
the TruckVault was loaded with equipment,
I installed a set of $90 Hellwig LoadPro Helper
Springs (capacity up to $1500 lbs.) to balance
the load and correct the sag. More expensive
"air-assist" spring systems and
air shocks are available, but the basic helper
springs solved the sag problem and dramatically
improved the ride, which had become a bit
bouncy. Most non-commercial SUVs and trucks
need springs reinforced to carry heavy loads.

Helper
springs bolted onto the rear leaf springs
of a
Ford Explorer help balance the TruckVault's
heavy load. |
After news of the
Ford Explorer tire problems surfaced in 2001,
I decided to keep my tires inflated to 32
lbs. per square inch. Before the tire controversy
emerged, Ford's recommended tire pressure
had been 26- to 30 lbs./psi for my SUVs
tire size. Fords recommendation since
has been changed to 30lbs./psi, but I still
use 32 lbs./psi, since my TruckVault-equipped
vehicle carries more weight.

The
TruckVault is excellent and well worth
its considerable weight in the
peace-of-mind it brings to my life.
Though bulky, this ingenious storage
system is already assembled when delivered
and is surprisingly easy to install
(if you have at least two people to
lift it). The use of lighter, space-age
materials might be a welcome refinement
(as long as security is not compromised),
but its bulk is probably a reasonable
compromise that is necessary to achieve
any real level of protection.
More
important, the TruckVault keeps my photographic
equipment organized, accessible and
secure, and frees me to concentrate
on creating photographs.
